what other people say

So – does this wisdom actually work in business? That’s the question.  Well, here’s what other people have to say:

The CEO of upmarket, Paddington based Beauty Therapist – Venustus. The head of an IT Start up company. A former partner in a top-tier Melbourne law firm. And one of Berni Dymet’s long term business partners.

Venustus – Beauty Therapist

We’ve been a successful beauty therapist provider for over 20 years.  With Hollywood A-list stars, New York fashion icons, rock stars and many other celebrities amongst our client base – it’s always been a strong business.  Then … the global financial crisis hit.  It was so tough – as it was for many businesses and because we’d been successful for so long, it was difficult to know what to do in this new climate.

Berni Dymet sat with us, listened and helped us see things from our clients’ perspective. I think it was the first time in 20 years that we really understood what our brand meant to our clients. It turned out to be so obvious – but we’d missed it all along.

With just a bit of help, we implemented a regular email communication with our clients and changed just a few things in how we presented things to them.  It wasn’t a lot – but the results, frankly, just blew us away.  Just those few simple things added thousands to our bottom line.  Right when we needed it.

An IT Start-up Company

I’ve been trying to kick off a new business concept for a while now.  I chanced across Berni at a conference and we just hit it off.  We later caught up over a cup of coffee.  In just a couple of hours, we managed to join the dots between us.  Just some obvious things I was missing.

I’d never have thought we could achieve so much in such a short period of time.  That cup of coffee was one of the best investments I’ve ever made.

Mediating a $250 million Outsourcing Dispute

Berni and I have worked together over quite a number of years.  One of our most memorable assignments was when he called me in to provide some legal assistance in a mediation that he was conducting.  It was a dispute on a $250 million contract for IT outsourcing between an Asian-based international airline, and two large, global IT service providers. What hung in the balance, was the airline’s core reservation system.  It was a huge deal.

The negotiations over three days were very tense.  But as a result, the parties came to an arrangement.  Quite some money changed hands, the threat to the airline’s business was averted and years on, so far as I know, those organisations are still doing business together.

Without doubt, a lot of that came down to Berni’s skill in confronting the issues, and bringing the warring parties into a space where they could resolve their significant differences and move on.

A Long-Term Business Partnership

I first met Berni when he was a young Captain, working for me in the Army.  We joined up again in the fledgling IT and management consulting firm that I’d kicked off, and over the next 20 years we worked closely together as business owners on a day to day basis.  So I guess that when it comes to business, I probably know Berni better than just about anyone else.

We were in some tough spots together over those years – both in terms of our own business and in helping our clients with their businesses.  What do I remember most about Berni at those times?

Well – he’s an outstanding communicator, who’s not afraid to tackle issues head on, and to give the “hard advice” to clients when it was needed.  And in the middle of those difficult and tense times, he always played a straight bat.  What I mean is that the advice he gave was always in the client’s best interests.

In fact, he developed quite a reputation in the marketplace for doing that.  He had an uncanny knack for helping people to see their way through complex problems; for boiling things down to the basics and finding a way through.

That’s what stands out.  Frankly, I couldn’t think of a better person to be involved in “the Hive”.
